This travel narrative aims to document, in an academic manner, the history of Cambodia between 1975 and 1979, with particular emphasis on the atrocities that occurred under the Khmer Rouge regime led by the Communist Party of Kampuchea under Pol Pot. While the historical knowledge presented herein is likewise available in existing scholarly works, this account distinguishes itself by integrating the author’s dual perspective as both a traveler and a historian. Drawing from the author’s personal experiences, the narrative foregrounds the lived realities of the Khmer people, particularly their suffering in prisons and the so-called killing fields. At the same time, it situates these experiences within a broader comparative framework by reflecting on contemporaneous developments in Philippine history, specifically the proclamation of Martial Law.
