CALL FOR PAPERS | SPECIAL ISSUE 2027 Rethinking General Education: The Arts, Sciences, and Human Formation in Contemporary Higher Education

SUKISOK Journal of the Arts and Sciences (eISSN 3028-1792) is pleased to announce its Call for Papers for a special issue scheduled for publication on February 28, 2027.

The special issue will be published under the guest editorship of Dr. Bernard Caslib, Associate Professor of Ethics and Philosophy at the University of the Philippines Manila.

About the Special Issue

Higher education extends beyond professional preparation. Through the arts and sciences, it cultivates critical inquiry, ethical judgment, scientific reasoning, cultural understanding, creativity, and responsible citizenship.

Amid ongoing discussions on the reframing of the General Education curriculum in the Philippines, this special issue invites scholars to reconsider the contributions of the arts and sciences to undergraduate learning and human formation. It seeks to examine what these disciplines offer, what should be preserved or reconsidered amid curricular change, and how General Education can respond to contemporary social, cultural, intellectual, and technological developments.

Consistent with SUKISOK's multidisciplinary scope, the special issue welcomes scholarship that examines General Education through the distinctive perspectives, knowledge traditions, and methods of inquiry of the arts and sciences.

Suggested Thematic Areas

The special issue welcomes submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following areas:

  1. Philosophy, Ethics, and Human Formation

  2. Language, Literature, and Communication

  3. History, Culture, and the Arts

  4. Society, Politics, Governance, and Citizenship

  5. Psychology, the Self, and Human Relations

  6. Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Understanding

  7. Philippine, Indigenous, and Global South Perspectives

  8. Knowledge, Technology, and Emerging Literacies

  9. Interdisciplinarity and the Future of General Education

  10. General Education Policy and Curricular Reform

Conceptual, philosophical, empirical, interdisciplinary, comparative, and policy-oriented contributions are welcome. Submissions should demonstrate clear relevance to the special issue's theme and the disciplinary scope of the Journal.

Guest Editor

Dr. Bernard Caslib

Associate Professor of Ethics and Philosophy

University of the Philippines Manila

Dr. Caslib's scholarly interests encompass applied ethics, bioethics, moral education, critical thinking, and the history of philosophy. He has served as a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) trainer of trainers for the General Education Ethics course and has extensive experience in academic publishing and editorial work.

Publication is subject to the satisfactory completion of the Journal's editorial and peer-review processes.

Submission Guidelines

Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished manuscripts that are not simultaneously under consideration by another journal.

All submissions will undergo editorial screening and the established peer-review process of SUKISOK. Acceptance will be based on scholarly merit, relevance to the special issue, and compliance with the Journal's publication standards.

Important: Authors must clearly indicate that their submission is intended for the Special Issue: Rethinking General Education to distinguish it from manuscripts submitted for the Journal's regular issues.

Regular manuscript submissions remain open and will continue to be considered for SUKISOK's regular April, August, and December issues.
